Mosquitoes belong to the same group as flies. In India, the most noticeable diseases spread by mosquitoes are dengue, malaria, and Chikungunya as well as Japanese encephalitis. It is important to reduce mosquito populations/breeding spots around your home and other living and recreational areas, you can do your best to minimize stagnant water on your property, but you have no control over what your neighbor does. Mosquitoes generally tend to hang around their breeding location and would normally operate within 50-100 meters. We all know that humans inhale oxygen and exhale carbon dioxide. Mosquitoes have receptors on their antennae that can detect the released carbon dioxide from as far off a distance as 50-75 feet. Mosquitoes can also smell human sweat. Our skin releases a chemical called octanol which attracts this little fly. Mosquitoes are also equipped with heat sensors around their mouthparts which can detect body heat. You might have heard that mosquitoes are drawn towards darker clothing. The fundamental reason is that dark clothes retain more heat as compared to light-colored clothing and it is this heat that attracts them. Male adult mosquitoes do not feed on your blood while female mosquito does to aid in egg production, Female mosquitoes need the iron and protein in your blood to reproduce. That's why they're so intent on biting you. Once they have your blood, they just need to find somewhere to lay eggs. Mosquito breeding grounds can be anywhere withstanding, stagnant water. This includes Scrap material on your roof, Tyres, Coolers, gutters, dog bowls, and containers, even in bottle caps too. That's why it's important to have effective mosquito control.

Types of Mosquitoes

Aedes (Aegypti): This mosquito spreads dengue, chikungunya, zika fever, and yellow fever. Female Aedes mosquitoes are daytime feeders, They bite in the late afternoon or early mornings. They inflict an innocuous bite, usually on the back of the neck and the ankles, and are easily disturbed during a blood meal, causing them to move on to finish a meal on another individual, making them efficient vectors. Aedes mosquito species have adapted well to human habitation, often breeding around dwellings in small amounts of stagnant water found in old tires or other small containers discarded by humans. Even a bottle cap filled with water can serve to incubate and hatch Aedes eggs. Eggs can survive for periods of drying up to a year and hatch out when exposed to water.

Anopheles (Anopheles Sinensis): The Anopheles mosquito is known universally as the Malaria Mosquito species because it is considered the primary vector of the disease. The Anopheles mosquitoes are known to transmit malaria and responsible for the transmission of 60-70% of malaria in India. Anopheles mosquitoes have discrete blocks of black and white scales on the wings. The female Anopheles mosquito laid her eggs in a wide range of locations. Anopheles usually prefer breeds in clean and unpolluted water, which may be freshwater, saltwater, Mangrove swamps, rice fields, grassy ditches, edges of streams and rivers, temporary rainwater collections.

Culex  (Culex pipiens): This genus of mosquitoes (sometimes referred to as common house mosquitoes) encompasses several species that are capable of transmitting diseases such as Japanese encephalitis. Most people are susceptible to mosquito bites, and in some individuals, they cause severe itching and swelling. Culex mosquitoes are known for causing itchy, red spots on your body from their bite. Culex mosquitoes mainly breed in polluted stagnant water and drain. They usually bite at night and rest indoor before and after the blood meal, Sometimes they may rest outdoor. Culex mosquitoes prefer darker colors and they are Long distance fliers.
